Metamorphose: Place
Metamorphose
"Suggests an abrupt or startling change induced by, or as if by magic— or a supernatural power".
My initial intention early in 2019 was to create a series of "studies” that captured “a day in the life”, reflecting on my work, my health, and mortality. The imaginary content I was creating with cartoonish/raw/visceral mark making and images were to be incorporated into larger paintings and drawings.
In 2020 with the Covid-19 pandemic’s strict quarantine and distress from a loss of employment --the work became a journal— a method for the journey. They recorded what was happening in the apocalyptic state of the world and in my world capturing notes and thoughts to work through it all with the immediacy of unconstrained smaller scale drawing. My personal life and experience are reflected in the drawings. They are raw and autobiographical, all composed within my safe quarantined existence. The back side on most of the drawings record a deeper introspection of “a day in the life”. They incorporate text and images created while engaged on the phone, Zoom interviews, doctor conversations family connects on Zoom, eventually realizing that the marks developed their own unique language in this process of transformation, a “Metamorphose”.
20 drawings into the process I began questioning the original intent that the work were studies for larger work. On re-examination they became a collective when assembled collectively they became a tapestry of images that present as a larger scale work.
The art work on these pages are not chronological though organized in three groups of genre: "A Day In The Life”, "Place" and “Self”.
